RV Camping in Great Smokey Mt. National Park

The Smoky Mountains run along Tennessee and North Carolina, creating one of the largest and most visited parks in America. There are 150 crossing ridges, streams, valleys and peaks covering approximately 800 miles. Hydrocarbons produced from the trees and vegetation combined with high humidity and rainfall produces a bluish/smoky cast. The natural beauty draws campers from across the world, and there are a number of RV parks in the area to enjoy the scenery.

    Great Smoky Mountains National Park

    • Within the actual Great Smoky Mountains National Park there are four types of camps. Backcountry is for backpackers and is several hiking miles into the park. Frontcountry is near the entrance of the park and has individual campsites near flush toilets and running water. Large groups of campers can utilize the large group campgrounds for more than eight people. Horse camps are near the frontcountry as well and have hitch racks for horses. Each area has specific restrictions.

    Pets

    • Many RVers travel with their pets, but keep in mind the specific rules of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Dogs are allowed, on leash, in picnic areas and along roads. They cannot be on leashes longer than six feet long. Dogs are also permitted only on the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail. Pets should not be left unattended in RVs or cars in the park as well.
