Within the actual Great Smoky Mountains National Park there are four types of camps. Backcountry is for backpackers and is several hiking miles into the park. Frontcountry is near the entrance of the park and has individual campsites near flush toilets and running water. Large groups of campers can utilize the large group campgrounds for more than eight people. Horse camps are near the frontcountry as well and have hitch racks for horses. Each area has specific restrictions.
Many RVers travel with their pets, but keep in mind the specific rules of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Dogs are allowed, on leash, in picnic areas and along roads. They cannot be on leashes longer than six feet long. Dogs are also permitted only on the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail. Pets should not be left unattended in RVs or cars in the park as well.
