Explore the George Washington National Forest online at Forestcamping.com or with maps of the terrain. Order maps online through the Cradle of Forestry in America Interpretive Association or find free maps on the USDA's National Forest website at Fs.usda.gov by clicking on "Maps and Publications" in the left-hand menu navigation of the home page.
Decide what type of camping experience you want to have. You may choose from rustic camping with just a tent and backpack in many areas of the park without a permit, or you may choose to camp in tents at designated camp sites. A number of sites throughout the park can accommodate cars and RV camping with electrical and sewer hookups.
Decide what activities and amenities are important to you and look for camp areas that offer access to fishing, bird watching, swimming or whatever else you want to do, as well as showers, fire pits, bathroom facilities, hookups or even enclosed cabins.
Since the national forest is divided into administrative regions over which park rangers are in charge, locate which region your campsites are in and contact the ranger over that region at Fs.usda.gov before you leave to verify that your campsite is operational during the time of year you want to camp. Make reservations, if necessary, which are often required for RV and cabin camping.
