Places to Camp Near Denali, AK

Denali National Park in central Alaska offers an unsurpassed outdoors experience, from observing bears in the wild to viewing Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America. Denali is Athabascan for "the great one," and the Denali experience is certainly a great. Denali National Park is on Highway 3, George Parks Highway, which connects Anchorage and Fairbanks. The park is closer to Fairbanks than Anchorage and is accessible by train from either city.
  1. Denali National Park Campgrounds

    • The National Park Service has the most campsites in the area. Six campgrounds within the park range from seven to 147 sites. The campgrounds have either flush or pit toilets. The largest campground is Riley Creek, just inside the park's entrance. Riley Creek has spaces for both tent and RV campers and is the only federal campground open year round. Generally, private vehicles are not allowed on park roads, but RVs can be driven to Teklanika campground 29 miles into the park. Once there, vehicles may not be moved until you are ready to leave. Wonder Lake campground, 85 miles inside the park, is farthest from the park entrance. It offers views of Mt. McKinley. Wonder Lake has a visitor center.

      A special camper bus takes campers to the campgrounds. Other shuttle buses transport visitors through the park. A fee is charged for the camper bus and the campgrounds.

    Denali Grizzly Bear Resort

    • Denali Grizzly Bear Resort is on the Nenana River at Milepost 231.1 on the Parks Highway, about six miles south of the park boundary. The resort offers both RV and tent camping, although tent camping is walk-in only. RV sites have electric and water hookups, but not sewer--RVers can also opt for a dry site. No pull-through sites are available. Amenities include coin-operated showers, cable TV, Internet, laundry facilities, tour desk, liquor store, convenience store and propane. The resort provides a central cooking shelter for all campers. Campfires are allowed in designated areas only.

    Denali Rainbow Village & RV Park

    • Denali Rainbow Village & RV Park is the closest full-service RV campground to the park. The campground is one mile north of the park entrance. The park has 67 sites with full or partial hook-ups, and has both back-in and pull-through sites. Sites have picnic tables, fire rings, cable TV and Internet. Potable water is available as are showers and a laundry room. A dump station is available. A small shopping mall is part of the complex.
