How to Camp Near the Mesa Verde National Park

Located in Southwest Colorado, Mesa Verde is a natural historical monument to the past. The Pueblo people made it their home for 700 years from A.D. 600 to A.D 1300. Today the national park protects the 4,000 known archaeological sites. These sites are some of the best preserved in the United States. Individuals, couples, and families flock to Mesa Verde to take a glimpse into the past and view the beauty that surrounds Mesa Verde. (See Resource 3) Many visitors choose to camp to gain a better understanding of the Pueblo people and feel closer to the natural beauty the area has to offer.

      Contact the Morefield camp grounds. Morefield campgrounds has over 435 locations near the park. They are located just four miles outside of the park entrance and are the only campgrounds that service Mesa Verde National Park. Each site has a table bench and grill. Camping is limited to 14 days. (See Resource 1)

      Make reservations. Mesa Verde National Park suggest you make reservations for the days you plan to camp near the park. Camping rates start at $20 per campsite per night (see reference 4). The campsite is open April through mid October. Ranger tours start at $3 per person.

      Pack supplies needed to camp. Morefield campgrounds have facilities for campers, recreational vehicles, and cars with camping equipment. Food, restroom facilities, laundry stations, and hot showers are provided at the camping sites along with water and electricity for RV's. You can rent equipment if you don't have your own. A canvas tent can be provided, along with two cots, carpet floor, and a lantern (see reference 1). A pancake breakfast for two is included in the rate. Base camping fees start at $39 per night.

      Bring clothing for all types of weather. The climate changes quickly - from warm days to cold evenings. It is suggested you dress in layers if you visit from June to October (see reference 3). It also a good idea to bring comfortable hiking boots, loose fitting clothing, rain wear, and jackets.

      Visit the Far View Visitor Center for your map to tour Mesa Verde National Park. They are open 8am to 5pm daily. You will need a map to find all of the hidden treasures of park. Far View Visitor Center is located inside Mesa Verde National Park about 15 miles from the main entrance. (See Resource 4)
