Florida Island Beaches

There are approximately 10,000 islands in Florida offering a tropical climate and well-kept beaches. While the weather is hot for the most part, thunderstorms are common in the early evening in this part of the world, therefore plan your trip to beach earlier in the day.

  1. Siesta Beach, Anna Maria Island

    • Siesta Beach is situated on the island of Anna Maria, just south of Tampa Bay, and is deemed to be one of the best in the area. This beach is believed to be millions of years old and the sand is 99 percent quartz, meaning that despite the hot weather it is possible to walk barefoot without burning one's feet. There is a large area of shallow water making it ideal for children to play in; additionally there are playgrounds, beach volleyball and fitness trails. The island of Anna Maria is relatively unspoiled -- you won't find fast food outlets or high rises here; it's also less crowded than many of the other islands.

    Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers

    • The island of Fort Myers is a family-friendly holiday destination; Fort Myers Beach has a reputation for safety thanks to its shallow waters. It is possible to walk the entire 7-mile length of the island by staying on the white sandy shore. Attractions include tennis, basketball, volleyball, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Aside from these beach-side activities the island contains a rich flora and fauna for visitors to explore.

    Tigertail Beach, Marco Island

    • Marco Island, in the Gulf of Mexico, is the largest of all the Florida islands. This white sandy beach, as with most of the beaches on Marco Island, opens at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset daily. There are beach volleyball nets and play areas for children, additionally there is a butterfly garden, a cafe and stands selling drinks and snacks. There are numerous national reserve parks on the island, ideal for nature enthusiasts as well as restaurants -- seafood and German food being especially popular -- shops and art galleries.

    Boca Grande Beach, Gasparilla Island

    • Gasparilla Island is situated between Fort Myers and Sarasota. Boca Grande Beach, in the town of Boca Grande offers more white sand and clear waters; it is not unusual to spot dolphins and other underwater life. There is a shaded picnic area on this beach and a lighthouse which is open to the public. Fishing, kayaking and sailing are all possible at this beach, as well as snorkeling. The town itself offers a curious mix of century-old buildings and luxury condominiums.
