Pahala, Hawaii, is located in a remote part of the Big Island of Hawaii, just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. In fact, the small town has only one hotel. Neighboring Naalehu has the other lodging options in the area. The lodging in the area includes mainly bed and breakfasts and resorts. The area is isolated but close to several national parks and beaches.
Sea Mountain is the only lodging choice in Pahala, in an area known as South Point. It's a resort that sits about 30 minutes from the Hawaiian volcanoes. The resort is also close to the black sand beaches of Hawaii. Accommodations are bungalow-style, separated from each other and including living rooms in some bungalows. The bungalows are either studios, one-bedroom or two-bedroom. Sea Mountain has an 18-hole golf course for guest use as well as a pool and hot tub. The resort overlooks the Pacific Ocean. According to the resort's website, a car is suggested to do grocery shopping in larger towns about 60 miles away.
Kalaekilohana is a bed-and-breakfast with four suites in Naalehu, about 13 miles away from Palaha. Each suite has a private bathroom and balcony. The bathrooms include walk-in rain showers. Every room has hardwood floors made from wood harvested in Hawaii. Breakfast is served every morning with local fruits, vegetables and coffee. The bed-and-breakfast is close to the beach and near volcanoes and parks and is the southernmost inn on the island. Standard rooms for two people cost $249 a night and include breakfast.
Shirakawa Motel is also in Naalehu. It's a budget motel costing about $40 a night as of January 2011. Accommodations are basic with simple rooms. The grounds include fruit trees for guest to stroll among. The motel is also only 100 yards from Mark Twain's monkeypod tree. The monkeypod trees were reportedly planted by Twain when he visited Hawaii in 1866.
Macadamia Farms Bed and Breakfast is also located in Naalehu and gets its name from the macadamia orchard that surrounds the facility. The bed-and-breakfast has more than 8 acres of grounds for guests to walk or lounge. Macadamia Farms has a tennis court with basketball goals for recreation. The facility has four rooms, including a family suite that sleeps four people. Each room has a private bathroom and private entrance. Breakfast is included and includes macadamia nuts from the grounds. Guests must book at least two nights minimum. Car rental is available at the bed-and-breakfast.
