Platinum Metal: Where Is it Found in the United States?

Platinum is a precious metal renowned for its strength and malleability. The mineral is mostly mined in South America and Russia however some smaller mines are located in the United States.

  1. Montana

    • The largest deposits of platinum in the United States are located in Montana. The Stillwater Mining Company is the country's only dedicated platinum and palladium mine.

    Arizona

    • Small amounts of platinum deposits are located in Arizona. These deposits are so small that platinum is known to exist in the state but not in a quantity that considered to be able to be profitably mined.

    Minnesota

    • A single mine has been opened in St. Louis County that mines platinum in very small amounts. The Northmet Mine uses platinum as a third priority mineral. The mine's first and second priorities are copper and nickel.
