Platinum is a precious metal renowned for its strength and malleability. The mineral is mostly mined in South America and Russia however some smaller mines are located in the United States.
The largest deposits of platinum in the United States are located in Montana. The Stillwater Mining Company is the country's only dedicated platinum and palladium mine.
Small amounts of platinum deposits are located in Arizona. These deposits are so small that platinum is known to exist in the state but not in a quantity that considered to be able to be profitably mined.
A single mine has been opened in St. Louis County that mines platinum in very small amounts. The Northmet Mine uses platinum as a third priority mineral. The mine's first and second priorities are copper and nickel.
