American Airlines has existed since before World War II; however, it wasn't known by its current name until 1934. Currently, American Airlines is the world's second-largest airline in passenger miles and fleet size. However, after the mergers of Continental with United, and Delta with Northwest, American will become the world's third-largest airline. American Airlines is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, with its largest hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. American Airlines has an extensive international network, but its domestic network is just as extensive. The airline serves four continents: Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
Continental Airlines has four major hubs, including the Newark Liberty International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport. In October of 2010, Continental and United closed a deal to merge the two airlines. Once combined, Continental and United will be the world's largest airline in passenger miles and overall revenue. Continental currently offers international flights to Europe, South America and Asia. Continental's headquarters in Houston will be closing and the new merged company's headquarters will be based in Chicago O'hare.
Delta is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and is presently the world's largest airline in passenger miles. It became the world's largest airline after its merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008. However, after the Continental-United merger is complete, it will become the world's second-largest airline. Delta currently offers international flights to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and Australia.
