New England is famous for beautiful autumn color, cold winter weather, a short spring season and a warm --- sometimes humid --- summer. New Hampshire is no exception. Owing to its north to south length of 190 miles temperatures are cooler in the northern regions. Mountainous regions, particularly Mount Washington, experience more severe weather than the rest of the state.
Summer high temperatures in July are in the mid 70 degrees Fahrenheit range. Overnight low temperatures extend from a low-to-mid 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter weather high temperatures average 34 degrees Fahrenheit in coastal areas. Low temperatures in higher elevations are in the neighborhood of 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The hottest recorded temperature in New Hampshire was 106 degrees Fahrenheit on July 4, 1911 in Nashua. The observatory at the summit of 6,288-foot Mount Washington recorded a record-breaking low temperature of -47 degrees Fahrenheit on Jan. 29, 1934.
The Mount Washington observatory has named the summit as home of the world's worst weather. Mount Washington has the lowest mean annual temperature of anyplace in the contiguous United States at 26.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
The strongest wind gust ever recorded --- 231 mph --- occurred at the observatory on April 12, 1934.
