Ideas for a Train Trip From Oregon to Montana

Passenger trains can get cramped, especially when you don't want to pay money for an expensive sleeper car. However, there are many ways to pass time on a journey from Oregon to Montana. To plan your trip, list sites you've always wanted to see in the Northwest corner of the country, including Montana, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. If you don't need to get off the train, bring a book onboard and grab a seat near the window.

  1. Seattle Layover

    • Before booking your train tickets through Seattle, Washington, check Qwest Field and WaMu Theater for events. Located within walking distance of the train station, both accommodate a variety of events, including concerts, football games, motorcycle and boat shows. On occasion, Qwest Field also holds home decorating and antique shows. For hungry passengers, try the local 88 Keys Dueling Piano and Sports Bar just north of the train station.

    Spokane Layover

    • If you plan your train adventure through Spokane, Washington, take the time on your layover to play a game of laser tag at Laser Quest, a few blocks south of the station. With options for birthday parties and corporate events, you can invite a train-bound business group or family for a little competitive fun. If you arrive between 10 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, check out the High Nooner, a popular sandwich shop a block north of the Amtrak station.

    Books

    • Imagine reading about the Montana landscape as your train treks through the Northwestern state. Buy a few Montana-centered books for your trip, such as "A River Runs Through It" by Norman McLean or "In Open Spaces" by Russell Rowland. If you don't want to read these books, try others with stories set in trains, such as Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged,"or "The Great Train Robbery" by Michael Crichton. Nonfiction lovers can pick up a book on the history of the railroad industry.
