Colorado, also known as the Centennial State, is known for its breathtaking scenery and world-class ski areas and resorts. Home to Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado National Monument, Mesa Verde National Park and the Great Sand Dunes, Colorado covers 104,100 square miles and is the eighth-largest state in the United States.
Located in the Rocky Mountain region, one corner of Colorado touches the corners of New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, and is the only state in the United States where the corners of four states meet. The state also borders Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas and a small section of Oklahoma. The state has an average elevation of 6,800 feet and is the nations highest state.
Colorado winters are snowy and cold, and summers are warm and dry during the day and cool at night. The average temperature throughout the state ranges from 32 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit. January is the coldest month and July is the warmest.
In 1805, the United States acquired Colorado, which was primarily an agricultural and mining state. In 1858, the gold rush was triggered when gold was discovered in Cherry Creek, which was renamed Denver and is the state capital. People were flocking to Colorado hoping to strike it rich. Colorado's economy is driven by the farm industry, service industry and manufacturing industry. Colorado also is an international center for tourism.
