The Catskill Mountains are located in upstate New York about two hours from Manhattan. You have many options to keep you entertained while visiting the Catskills, whether you want to explore the outdoors or want to find out more about its history.
Basha Kill Vineyards is the first commercial winery in the Catskill Mountains. During the summer months, there is a live band every Saturday night at the wine tasting room that has been renovated from a garage. You are welcome to bring your own cheese and crackers, fruit or a lunch to compliment the $5 wine tasting, which includes a wine glass to take home.
Historic Huguenot Street is located at the base of the Catskill Mountains in New Paltz, New York and is considered to be the oldest street in America. You will be able to see seven original houses sitting on six acres dating back to 1678.There are several exhibits available to view throughout the year. Guided tours of the homes are offered from April to December and range in price from $9 to $12, as of November 2010.
There are plenty of outdoor activities offered in the mountains depending on what season you are visiting. In the summer months you can go to Hunter Mountain and zipline on the longest and highest line in North America. There are also eight different areas in the mountains with miles of trails to explore. If you are visiting in the winter months, consider skiing at one of the resorts like Hunter Mountain, Windham Mountain or Belleayre Mountain.
