July 4th Activities in the Catskill Mountains

The Catskills region of New York provides a breath of fresh air for those who want to take a break in a natural wonderland from the daily grind. This area enjoys all four seasons, with winter activities in the mountains and scores of outdoor recreational opportunities through the summer. For a 4th of July celebration, head to the Catskills for music in the mountains courtesy of the Belleayre Music Festival in Highmont, or take in small-town carnivals and festivals throughout the region.
  1. Greene County

    • Greene County (greenetourism.com) is the northeastern corner of the Catskills region of New York, and these smaller communities enjoy a more traditional hometown celebration of the Fourth of July. Enjoy a parade through the community of Windham that caps at Windham Mountain, including an outdoor barbecue and fireworks. You can also enjoy a parade with local vendors and fireworks in the community of Cairo. A day-long celebration is in East Durham, with live entertainment, a bouncy house for the kids and fireworks at dusk.

    Delaware County

    • Delaware County is in the northwestern corner of the Catskills region. You can take a step back in time when you head to the annual Independence Day celebration at the Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith (hanfordmills.org.). Enjoy frog jumping and fishing competitions, as well as horse-drawn carriage rides and 19th century games. The annual Firemen's Carnival and Fireworks in Margaretteville (delawarecountytoday.com) celebrates the more than a century old Margaretville Fire Department with such activities as carnival rides and games, a car show and a fireworks display.

    Ulster County

    • Take in live music on the mountain at the annual Belleayre Music Festival at the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center (belleayre.com) in Highmount, which begins around the Fourth of July and lasts through the summer. The annual celebration in the small community of Ellenville offers a parade and arts and crafts in Liberty Square. At dusk enjoy fireworks at the Joseph Y. Resnick Airport.

    Sullivan County

    • Sullivan is located in the southern part of the Catskills region, and includes such communities as Monticello and Liberty. Take the family camping at the Catskill Adventure Resort campground near Wurtsboro, which has several theme weekends throughout the summer. Its July 4th Weekend event includes a bike parade and a flea market, as well as a pig roast hosted by the campground. Enjoy a more modern-style getaway at the Monticello Raceway and Casino (monticellogamingandraceway.com), which has decorated horses in the patriotic red, white and blue, and fireworks to celebrate the holiday.
