Things to Do While Visiting New York

New York attracts millions of visitors every year from all over the globe. The city features activities 24 hours a day, seven days a week and something for everyone. New York offers gorgeous views from atop the Empire State Building, shops and boat tours out of the South Street Seaport and the world-renowned Bronx Zoo.

  1. Empire State Building

    • A trip to New York usually requires visiting one of the ciy's world-famous sites such as the Empire State Building. The building features two observatories that look out onto the tri-state region, including one on the 86th floor and another on the 102nd floor. The building allows visitors to bring cameras, backpacks and small carry-on sized luggage pieces; however, all visitors must pass a security check. The building features a number of shops and restaurants at ground level, such as the Heartland Brewery, Chipotle and Eurpoa Cafe. The observatories open are every day of the year from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., although hours vary during holidays.

    South Street Seaport

    • The South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan along the East River offers a variety of shopping, dining and tourist options and activities. The area features restaurants such as the Heartland Brewery & Beer Hall, Sequoia and Harbour Lights. The TKTS ticket booth sells discounted tickets to Broadway shows, and the Harbour Experience Company docks at the pier before and after each boat tour. The seaport also offers an attraction for history buffs, the South Street Seaport Museum, which features artifacts and ship tours. The seaport opens to the public 365 days a year from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.

    Bronx Zoo

    • The world famous Bronx Zoo features exciting animal exhibits such as gorillas at the Congo Gorilla Forest, Siberian tigers at Tiger Mountain and Madagascar!, which features animals native to the African island of the same name. The zoo also offers indoor exhibits such as the World of Reptiles, the Monkey House and Butterfly Garden as well as outdoor exhibits such as the Sea Lion pool and a children's petting zoo. The zoo offers a snack bar and cafe as well as daily animal demonstrations. The zoo's summer hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends. From November 1 to April 1, the zoo switches to its winter hour schedule: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week.
