Things to Do in Central New York

New York is located in the northeastern part of the United States and is the third most populated state in America. It is also home to the largest city by population, New York City. Travelers to the central part of New York can visit smaller cities such as Syracuse, Liverpool and the state capital of Albany. There are also a variety of attractions in the central region, including museums, parks, golf courses and ice-skating rinks.

  1. Museums

    • Central New York is home to a variety of museums including the New York State Museum in Albany. This facility is home to a vast number of exhibitions including traveling exhibitions such as September 11, 2001: A Global Moment. Guests can also enjoy ongoing exhibits such as the Adirondack Wilderness, Art for the People and the Ancient Life of New York. The museum also hosts programs such as family fun weekends, earth day celebrations, holiday events and birthday parties. Hours are daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with closings on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Admission is free.

    Parks

    • Central New York is also home to a vast selection of parks such as the Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool. Guests can enjoy a vast array of activities such as boating and fishing as well as amenities including hiking trails, archery, kickball, picnic areas, the marina and the skate park. The park is also home to the Butterfly Gardens, the Griffin Visitor Center and the famous Syracuse Carousel from Long Branch Park, a destination amusement park during the early 20th century.

    Attractions

    • Visitors to central New York will also find a wide range of attractions such as the Fairmount Glen Miniature Golf course or the Clinton Square Ice Rink in Syracuse. The golf course is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. until midnight and features a beautiful landscaped course with shade trees and benches. The facility can handle groups of any size, hosts birthday parties and also features a concession stand.

      The Clinton Square Ice Rink is located in downtown Syracuse with a skating season each year from the end of November until April. Special rates are available for groups of 15 or more and the rink also hosts specials such as family night, and lunch time skate.
