10 Things to Do in NYC

New York City is like no other city on Earth. It has culture, a unique style and an indescribable energy. There are unlimited things to do when visiting regardless of the season or your pocketbook. It can be overwhelming to plan your itinerary with so many incredible activities, landmarks and attractions to experience.

  1. Statue of Liberty

    • This gift of friendship from France has become a symbol of freedom and an American icon since its dedication in 1886. This lovely lady has welcomed immigrants, tourists and returning Americans from her island perch. When ocean travel was the norm, the statue was the first glimpse of America. Visitors to the Statue of Liberty must purchase tickets for the ferry ride over and pass through security similar to the airport. You should allow a minimum of three hours for the visit, especially if on a guided tour. In the summer, pack your own lunch if possible and enjoy a lovely picnic on Liberty Island.

    Central Park

    • You cannot think of New York City without visualizing Central Park. It is 843 acres of rolling grass, lakes, playing fields, fountains and playgrounds. It is home to the Central Park Zoo, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Belvedere Castle, the Children's Zoo and many other attractions. The park operates from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. and is closed to vehicular traffic at certain times.

    Empire State Building

    • Who could forget the image of King Kong on top of the Empire State Building highlighting the incredible New York skyline? Even when the Empire State Building was no longer the tallest building in the world, it still remains a symbol and since 9/11 is the tallest building in New York. There is an observatory deck on the 86th floor that allows one of the best 360-degree views of the city. You must pass through security to enter this landmark and there are some restrictions to what you may carry up. Be prepared for several very long lines but the wait is worth the experience.

    Times Square

    • Named after the Times building more than100 years ago, this bustling cultural hub is a must-see for any tourist. Hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in this place to celebrate New Year's with the traditional dropping of the ball. Countless stores, restaurants and cinemas have found their home under the bright neon signs and JumboTron that light up this New York hot spot.

    Metropolitan Museum of Art

    • Located on the edge of Central Park, this is one of the largest museums in the world boasting more than 2 million pieces of art. This museum also has extensive collections of clothing, musical instruments and weapons. Allow a full day or several days to enjoy all the various exhibits.

    Ground Zero and the Ground Zero Museum

    • One cannot visit New York without paying tribute to the events of 9/11. The museum offers an opportunity to remember those who were lost in the World Trade Center tragedy.

    Brooklyn Bridge

    • This engineering marvel took more than 14 years to build, spans the east river connecting lower Manhattan to Brooklyn and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the nation. Take a walk over the bridge and enjoy incredible views of the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty.

    Grand Central Terminal

    • This terminal is home to wonderful restaurants, lovely boutiques and a bustling Grand Central Market and remains a hub of transportation. Renovated, revamped and shined to a rich sparkle, Grand Central Station dodged a wrecking ball to remain a historical tribute to a time of innovation. There are guided tours available for the terminal to highlight its vibrant history and many interesting areas.

    Staten Island Ferry

    • This ferry ride runs from Manhattan to Staten Island and is the only non-vehicle means of transportation between the two points. The hour round-trip cruise can be romantic, offers great sightseeing options for tourists and is free. It runs 24 hours a day using multiple boats and operates year-round.

    Rockefeller Center

    • Another amazing landmark featured in movies, books and pictures of New York City, Rockefeller Center has something for everyone. From the famous ice rink in the winter to the Top of the Rock observation deck to Radio City Music Hall, there is always something going on no matter what time of year you visit.
