Non-Touristy Things to Do in NYC

There is so much to see and do in New York City. So much that a person could stay there for months and not see everything. Still, after you've been to the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, you may start getting tired of fighting the crowds. The solution? Go where the tourists aren't.
  1. Get Off the Beaten Path

    • New York City is more than just Manhattan. Although most tourists spend their time in the central island, there are four outer boroughs that most tourists don't see. Although these boroughs are mostly residential, each one contains attractions that are worth seeking out. If you don't mind the effort of getting there, be sure to see the museums in Long Island City and Astoria, both in Queens. The Bronx Zoo is another interesting attraction that has been mentioned in movies. Finally, for budget conscious explorers, the Staten Island Ferry offers a free ride with excellent views of the city.

    See an Offbeat Game

    • Everyone has heard of the Yankees and the Mets. But do you know about New York City's minor league baseball teams, the Staten Island Yankees and the Brooklyn Cyclones? While New York City has a number of world-renowned sports franchises, it's lesser known teams, such as the New York Liberty women's basketball team or the New York Red Bull's soccer team are worth checking out.

    Brunch on the Weekend

    • If New York is the city that never sleeps, it is also the city that doesn't go home before eating. Weekend brunch means comfort food, and a casual restaurant is a New York tradition. If your trip involves a weekend stay, you may want to join the locals at a diner or eatery for eggs, bacon, soup and sandwiches

    Bring your Walking Shoes

    • Why just look at the Brooklyn Bridge, when you can explore it up close? To walk the Brooklyn Bridge, take the subway to Brooklyn. Then follow the Esplande before crossing back into Manhattan on the bridge. This will provide you with some of the best views of Manhattan that you can get. This is a great way to sightsee, and you'll be sharing the bridge mostly with locals.

Eat a Little on the Wild Side

    • New York City is home to over eight million people. Since not all of them like to eat the same things, New York City is a gastronomic melting pot in the truest sense. A visit to New York is a chance to try new foods. So skip the New York Pizza and New York cheesecake. Instead head to Amsterdam Avenue to try a whitefish bagel at Barney Greengrass. For really adventurous cuisine, try the specialty at Katz's Deli: a cold tongue sandwich.
