Things to Do by Yourself in NYC

Although it's been said that one is the loneliest number, this does not have to be the case in New York City. While many travelers are reluctant to go it alone because they fear loneliness or being singled out for crime, others embrace the solitude and independence that solo travel provides. New York City is the perfect place for the latter type of traveler. There are plenty of attractions in New York City that singles can take in while unaccompanied.
  1. People Watch

    • If the boroughs of New York City were to be split into separate cities, they would form five of the largest cities in the United States. All these people in one place make this city the perfect destination for people watching. The perfect places for people watching are the places where people congregate, such as the parks, Grand Central Terminal, Times Square or Rockefeller Center.

    View the Skyline

    • The New York City Skyline is one of the most photographed in the world. In addition, there are a number of great vantage points for seeing the skyline. You can travel up to the observation deck of the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center, take a horse-drawn carriage through Central Park, ride the Staten Island Ferry, climb up to the newly reopened observation deck in the crown of the Statue of Liberty or walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

    Tour the City

    • New York City offers numerous guided tours of historical buildings and famous locations. This can be a great way to learn about the history of a city that predates the founding of our country. Some not-to-be-missed tours include landmarks such as Grand Central Terminal and the Statue of Liberty, as well as museums such as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

    Read a Book

    • The New York Public Library has one of the largest collections of books in the world. More than 88 miles of books are stored on eight levels and in an underground storage chamber that runs the length of Bryant Park behind the library. A quick browse of the public shelves should help any visitor find a book. Visitors can then while away the time in the library's reading room.

    Dining Alone

    • Almost any restaurant in New York City can tailor service for one. For travelers who prefer not to eat at a solo table, many establishments offer a bar area where solo travelers can eat.
