For the aspiring archaeologist, or those just looking for an interesting souvenir, digging for your own fossils is a fun way to explore the landscape of Wyoming. Throughout the state there are many companies that allow visitors to dig for fossils in a quarry for a fee, ranging from $16 to $65 depending on your age and the length of your stay. Sites will provide the tools for digging up fossils.
Locate a fossil digging site. Some sites require advance reservation, so plan accordingly.
Split or break off pieces of rock in the quarry with the tools provided to you on your tour.
Look closely at the ground around you, some fossils may have already been excavated and have just been overlooked. According to U-DIG Fossils, most fossils are found in limestone shale, which easily splits into sheets.
Keep your fossil finds. Most sites allow visitors to keep most of their fossils, provided that they are not extremely rare. Many of the found fossils will be trilobites, or extinct anthropods, according to the Millard County Tourism website.
