Marathon, Florida is the midpoint of the Florida Keys, roughly halfway between Key Largo and Key West. Like many of the keys, Marathon has a bevy of deep-sea fishing trips, ranging from inexpensive party boats to more costly private fishing charters.
Party boats can carry upwards of 100 passengers on deep-sea fishing trips. These trips often cost around $50 and go up from there, depending on the length of the trip. Charter boats carry six or fewer passengers and often cost over $500 for the entire trip.
Commonly caught fish include dolphin, wahoo, marlin, tuna, sail and sword fish. Other fish can include grunts, grouper, shark and barracuda.
In Marathon, most charter boats and party boats take care of the state-mandated fishing licenses for the length of the fishing trip. Depending on the boat, passengers may need to buy or catch their bait, but generally the boat has the required tackle. Make sure to pack a hat, water and sunscreen, as the tropical Florida sun can ruin a fishing trip if you're not prepared for the heat.
