Sea Discoveries

In 2007, during a fishing expedition from New Zealand, half a dozen mysterious creatures -- colossal squid -- were caught and pulled from the deep waters of the south ocean near Antarctica. The monstrous creatures tipped the scales at approximately 1,000 lbs., hosting eyes as large as dinner plates. It was a phenomenal discovery because no one that day expected such a bounty of seafood. If their original goal was to search for food, the calamari rings from their catch would have been the size of tractor tires.
  1. Entertaining and Educational Sea Discoveries

    • When the average deep water fan considers an excursion in deep sea diving or deep sea fishing, most often they do not plan to come across dozens of hideous looking, huge creatures such as colossal squid. However, there are many more thousands of unique sea creatures to discover deep in the water, and on many continents other than Antarctica. Researching where the known creatures might reside is a good idea before starting on a deep sea expedition. However, discovering other unknown sea inhabitants along the way in an underwater journey is what draws most people into the sport of deep sea exploration.

    Adventurous Cruise Packages

    • Adventure cruise companies in the Bahamas, such as Blackbeard's Cruises, Aqua Cat and Cat Ppalu, offer deep sea diving packages for all ages. Their clients have the opportunity to participate in sailing, fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. The price is dependent upon the package chosen, however, on a Blackbeard's cruise, one package for adults includes a seven-day dive trip for under $1,000. The shipping vessels are 65 feet long and can carry up to 24 passengers and house single and double bunks. Aqua Cat Cruises describes itself as a floating resort with a bar, meals and water sports included in the package price.

    Leisure Cruising

    • Those who love to be "on" the sea, as opposed to "in" the sea, would be best suited for participating in a leisure cruise. There are several companies, such as Carnival, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, that provide leisure cruising on the sea. Looking out over the bow of an ocean liner, a fan of the sea has the opportunity to discover the beauty of the water, at sunrise, dusk and sunset. A killer whale emerging from its home (a short distance away) and reentering with such powerful force is a discovery that few people get the opportunity to see in their lifetime.

    Underwater Communities

    • Coral reefs are the ocean's underwater community that is most important to the marine ecosystem and food chain. There are beautiful, colorful gardens of coral reefs swaying back and forth in the water and providing shelter and protection from predators for fish and other living creatures residing in the sea. Coral reef has been referred to as the "rainforests of the sea" because they support life in the planet's ecosystem. Coral communities provide other valuable functions such as: protection to shorelines during storms; recreation and tourism; and opportunities to research marine life and the effects of climate change. A discovery of the sea, and what it holds, is a topic that can not only be educational but entertaining for all ages no matter the gender.
