Located in Garrett County, Maryland, Deep Creek is an area of natural beauty with a host of outdoor activities to enjoy. At its heart lies the state’s largest freshwater lake, Deep Creek Lake, covering just under 4,000 acres. The air there is so clean that vehicle emission testing is considered unnecessary. In addition to its outdoor attractions, Deep Creek has several quaint towns worth exploring as well as opportunities to shop.
Deep Creek Lake was developed with water-based activities in mind. A boat launch facility within Deep Creek Lake State Park is open year-round, weather permitting, and the lake is stocked with trout, walleye, bass and yellow perch for fishing. You can swim off the state park beach, manned by lifeguards in the summer, picnic by the waterfront where shelters, grills and tables are located and camp in the Meadow Mountain campground from mid-May to mid-October. Wakeboards are available for rental at McHenry on the northern reaches of the lake, while spectator sport is provided by the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Racing Association every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Of the seven state parks and forests in Garrett County, several radiate out from Deep Creek Lake, providing a host of hiking opportunities. Several trails at Meadow Mountain in Deep Creek Lake State Park range from moderate to difficult. East of Deep Creek Lake State Park, backpacking is available in Savage River; you can also obtain a permit for primitive camping there. Several outfitters organize guided tours providing information on Deep Creek’s wildlife, including bears, otter and deer. All Earth Eco Tours combine hiking adventures with programs that include wee hikes for toddlers and yoga in the hardwood forests of the state park.
The huge variety of home furnishings at Grand Central, located at Trader’s Landing in the heart of Deep Creek Lake, provides a respite from outdoor adventures. You can take home memorabilia and gift baskets or make more substantial purchases, such as fireplaces and bed frames. Crafts by local artisans and Deep Creek Lake stoneware pottery can be bought at Schoolhouse Earth in Friendsville, nine miles north of McHenry, while 10 miles southwest, in Oakland, you can find primitive dolls and rustic furniture at Pieces From The Past.
