The History of Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee

Graceland Cemetery, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a cemetery maintained by a perpetual endowment for grounds maintenance and cemetery upkeep to foster a dignified atmosphere for guests to visit their loved ones.

  1. History

    • Graceland was established as a non-profit cemetery in 1941. This cemetery was founded by three Lutheran churches--Grace, St. Johns' and Trinity. The 125 acres of Graceland are maintained by an endowment fund.

    Notable Residents

    • Manager Bill Hoffmann explains that Graceland is home to 1,000 entombed former residents of a Milwaukee community mausoleum. These entombed bodies were moved to new homes in Graceland and buried in-ground, before the community site was demolished. According to FindAGrave,com, Graceland contains the remains of Edward Crosby who owned the Great Lakes Shipping Company of Milwaukee. Mr. Crosby, his wife and daughter were guests on the Titantic. Although his wife and daughter survived the sinking, he did not. Gilbert Moorer, Jr. founded The Esquires, a popular rhythm and blue vocal group of the 60's. He passed away in 2008 and is buried in Graceland.

    • Graceland Cemetery offers funeral preplanning and memorial services, grave site markers and floral arrangements. According to Hoover's.com, this organization has 11 employees and had sales of $1.5 million in 2009.
