With its over 40 ski resorts, "SKI" magazine has ranked Michigan as the top skiing destination in the Midwest. Michigan is also a popular place for snowboarding, a sport that was invented there in 1965.
Snowmobiling, dog sledding and cross country skiing are also popular pursuits in Michigan in the winter. The state boasts a 6,204-mile interconnected network of snowmobiling trails, as well as 3,000 miles of scenic trails for cross country skiing.
The Michigan Tech Winter Carnival in Houghton, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is one of the largest annual winter events in the state. The event is particularly well-known for its snow statue competition; it hosts many other events, such as a human sled dog race, snow volleyball and snowshoe races.
