Michigan City, located east of Chicago across the southern portion of Lake Michigan, dates back to 1830. Founded as a harbor for the transportation of building supplies into Indiana, the city grew from its lumber and gristmill industry. Today, with its proximity to the lake, the Washington Marina is the base for many boat charters that offer excursions such as sport fishing, gourmet food cruises, scenic and sunset tours. Salukis Pride Charter Fishing, based at the Washington Park Marina in Michigan City, offers a number of custom-designed excursions on three different boats: a 30-foot Searay, a 36-foot Trojan King Fisher and a 25-foot Trophy. It provides tours for business and office groups, parties, Lake Michigan fireworks cruises and romantic Venetian Night cruises. Any amenity, such as food and drink, can be arranged for each cruise.

Michigan City Sailboat Charters, based at the Washington Park Marina at Dock 600, offers a fleet of 30- to 40-foot sailboats. It provides both captained or private charters for one-day, two-day and one-week excursions. Each sailboat provides fully equipped kitchens along with many modern amenities such as gas stoves, oven, microwaves and hot water. As of September 2010, rates range from $475 for the day to $2600 for a weekly charter.
