Basalt, Nevada, is a town that is close to many treasured landmarks. Located nine miles east of California, and approximately 100 miles south of Carson City, Basalt is central to lakes, mountains, parks and forests. Skiing at Sugarloaf mountain, camping in Yosemite National Park or hiking through the Sierra National Forest can be reached in less than 20 minutes from Basalt. There are no motels in Basalt itself, but there are several in the surrounding area.
Route 6 runs through Basalt and continues west until its end, 39 miles away, in the picturesque town of Bishop, Ca. Vagabond Inn Bishops sits nestled in the Owens Valley, between the Sierra Nevada and White mountains. The charming, rustic exterior is juxtaposed by an interior that has every modern convenience. The rooms open onto a balcony with a breathtaking view of the mountains. There is cable television, a pool, a restaurant that is open 24 hours a day, even barbecues and a service that will clean fish that are caught in nearby rivers.
Located just inside the California border, about 15 miles from Basalt, is the town of Benton. Benton was established in 1852 and made its way as a silver mining town. Visiting the Inn at Benton Hot Springs is like stepping back into history. Guests can either stay in the 1880's style Old House or in 1960's style bungalows. The grounds and rooms are decorated with a variety of antiques, giving each room its own unique look. The Inn is perhaps best known for its hot tubs. There are nine, filled with natural water from the hot springs, located around the premises. They are available for rent by the hour, the day, or overnight. Each hot tub site comes with a fire pit and space to camp.
East of the town of Basalt, approximately 30 miles along Route 6, is Tonopah, Nevada. Tonopah sits halfway between Reno and Las Vegas, and people traveling between the two have long enjoyed the comfort of Jim Butler Inn. With only 24 guest rooms, that each open to the outside, Jim Butler prides itself on the views and stargazing to be done in Tonopah. Each room has a queen size bed and free Wi-Fi, coffee and breakfast. In the immediate area are an old mining park and a ghost town. Tonopah is also just 35 miles from Nevada's newest state park, Monte Cristo's Castle.
