Apple Picking in Louisiana

Apples grown in Louisiana follow a similir cyle to varieties grown in Northern climates. Apples ripen in the summer months and bear fruit in the fall. Southern varieties of the popular fruit are planted as seedlings, cultivated, and harvested through a more scientific process referred to as "chilling" the trees as they mature. Picking apples takes place during the harvest period.

  1. Identifiying Apple Varieties and Orchards

    • Mature apples are picked from September through November.

Two varieties found in Louisiana include "Ein Schimer," likened to the "Golden Delicious" variety of the North (crisp and tart in taste), and "Anna" ( a sweeter variety that is equally as crisp). Both varieties are used for making applesauce and pies.

    Locating an Orchard and Availability

    • Apples grow in rows of trees within the orchard.

Only a handful of apple orchards are scattered throughout Lousiana. Franklinton and Holden each have two orchards, and Shreveport has one. Pick-your-own seasonal farms open to the public during the harvest period. Nurseries often provide information on local orchards and farms as harvest approaches.

    Share the Experience

    • Picking apples is a fun, family activity.

Those of all ages enjoy picking apples. Going to the orchard or farm with family and friends adds to the fun. Bring a reusable cloth bag to hold your apple after picking.

    Proper Picking

    • Do not force firmly attached apples from the branch.

Cup the ripe apple with the palm of your hand, and gently twist the stem. Release the apple from the branch and place within your bag.

    Considerations

    • Apples start out as blossoms before flourishing into fruit.

Order seedlings or purchase apple starter trees from an online or local nursery to plant and cultivate apples. Louisiana apples must have "chilling hours" in order to grow properly.
