Nilgai Hunting in Texas

Nilgai antelope hunting is both challenging and rewarding. Many hunters make the visit to Texas every year for the sole reason of hunting Nilgai. However, many in the hunting world are unaware of the opportunities available to those wanting to hunt this animal. The animal is unfamiliar to most people and most hunters don't have experience with it as they are found only in small areas in the U.S.

  1. The Animal

    • Nilgai are a breed of antelope native to India. They were stocked in Texas in the '30s. They are big, the second largest member of the antelope family. A mature Nilgai can weigh up to 600 lbs. Trophy size Nilgai antelope bulls will normally sport vertically oriented horns measuring 8.5 to 10 inches in length. Known as the Blue Bulls of India, they are a regional attraction in Texas.

    Attraction to Nilgai Hunting

    • With more Nilgai currently in Texas than in India, Nilgai hunting is more convenient than ever. There are more than 15,000 Nilgai estimated to be roaming on Texas ranch lands. Due to the Nilgai's location on private lands, they are hunted as part of a hunting package, rather than on a self-guided hunting trip.

    Difficulty of Hunting

    • Known for their elusive nature, Nilgai are extremely difficult to hunt. They have keen eyesight and an uncanny sense of approaching danger. They can live up to 20 years, growing more savvy and elusive as they get older. Additionally, they boast a thick elastic hide that covers the neck and chest area up to 1 inch thick. Entry and exit wounds are covered by this thick hide, making tracking very difficult.

    Hunting Style

    • Hunting is usually done safari-style from high-racked trucks driving slowly into the wind. Hunters continue by foot once a potential bull is spotted. Stalks go up to about 1/2 mile and it can easily take an hour to get into position. Shots are generally taken off shooting sticks from a distance of 100 to 200 yards.

    Costs and Packages

    • Cost can run the gamut from budget to luxury, depending on what is included. A typical price is $2,500 for a two- to three-day excursion as of 2010. Food and sleeping accommodations are included in the price. Additional fees for your Nilgai being skinned and caped sometimes exist, so it is a good idea to call ahead of time.
