Fifth Grade Field Trip Ideas

Around fifth grade, children have established strengths and weaknesses in their academic life, so field trip options are somewhat tricky. You want to select locations that will be beneficial to the entire class. Ten-year-old children also have a keen willingness to learn, especially if they are interested in the subject matter. Consider interactive field trip locations and those that will keep students' attention throughout.

  1. Discovery Museums

    • Take the kids to a discovery or exploratory museum. These types of museums are hands-on. Students can take part in the exhibits and answer questions posed by museum guides. There are often special exhibits that come through discovery museums, in which students are able to learn about specific subject matters. These museums often hold the attention of 10-year-old children.

    Plays

    • A performance on the stage is often not interactive, but children enjoy watching live theater. It can hold the attention of people of any age. Taking the students to a play such as "The Wizard of Oz" or "Aladdin" are popular with both boys and girls. Musicals may not be the best option for fifth grade students.

    The Zoo

    • The Zoo is fun for young and old. Kids love to see live animals and no matter how many times they visit, new animals are on display or out to be seen. If you go on a field trip, the zoo staff will usually take you on a guided tour enabling students to learn more information about the animals. This may include little known fact about the animals the children can take home to impress mom and dad with.

    Aquarium

    • Students can learn much about marine life by visiting an aquarium. This is a great option if they are learning about the ocean and its creatures in a science class. Students are able to see things like sharks up close, which is not something that is offered at the zoo.

    IMAX

    • Watching a movie at the IMAX gives students the opportunity for enhanced visual and sound on the big screen. Educational movies about space, archeological discoveries and nature are popular options for student field trips. Many fifth grade classes have begun learning about space missions and archeology in class and this helps them appreciate these advances.
