Elk Grove, California is located just south of Sacramento. The town was founded in 1850 and still has a number of historical attractions, including Old Town Elk Grove, which is on the register of National Historic Places. The city also has a number of modern attractions, including golfing, outdoor festivals, shopping and dining. Elk Grove also has recreational parks for both children and adults.

  1. Old Town Elk Grove

    • Old Town Elk Grove was established in 1868. The city has a number of Victorian buildings from the mid-1880s. Attractions include walking down the main street, shopping and dining. The city also has an annual chili cook-off every spring and a Dickens festival every December. The town is listed on the National Register of historic places because of its architecture and engineering significance. The buildings reflect the architecture of 1875 to 1899, 1900 to 1924 and 1925 to 1949. The historic district features wood frame bungalows built in the early 20th century and brick and wood buildings with Victorian ornaments built during the late 19th century.

      Visitors can pick up walking tour guides of Old Town Elk Grove from some of the shops on the main street or the visitor center. These pamphlets direct visitors to the Victorian and late 19th and 20th century revival buildings. Visitors can learn the history of many of the buildings and can also learn about some of the past inhabitants of the homes in the city.

    Emerald Lakes Golf Course

    • The Emerald Lakes Golf Course is a public, nine-hole golf course with a driving range and a practice area. The 2,307 yard course was designed by Rick Yount and features three lakes. It is open year-round, and lessons can be obtained by an appointment. A snack and drink area is located near the course. The course is rated at a 30.9 with a slope rating of 99.

    Morse Park

    • Morse Park is a recreation area fit for the whole family. The park features a jogging trail, a basketball court and playground areas geared to different age groups. The two- to five-year-old play area features a slide, saddle spinners and a sand pit. The five to 12-year-old playground features swings, a longer slide, rock climbing areas and a rope climber. The playground also features an area spraying water in which children can play when the weather is warm. The park is open year-round.
