Hotel Belmar in Altoona, Pennsylvania

Despite the name the Hotel Belmar is actually a restaurant and bar. There are less than three dozen bars in Altoona, but the Hotel Belmar is unique in its long, rich history in a city almost as old as it is.

    • The Hotel Belmar was originally a home that was built in 1882 for Martin Asbury Green. It was sold in 1901 for $4,000 to Thomas K. Maher, who also used the property as a home.

    Hotel

    • The McGough family bought the home in 1903, made improvements and used the building as a hotel for over 60 years. It was well liked by travelers who favored the comfort, quality service and good location.

    Changing Hands

    • Zoe McGough was the last owner of the hotel in her family and lived there from 1904 until 1964, when it was purchased by restauranteurs Francis Gehl and Carl Greico.

    Restaurant and Bar

    • Alfred and Barbara Mignogna purchased the property in 1984 and established it as a restaurant and bar, which it still is as of April 2010.

    Music & Ambience

    • The Hotel Belmar frequently has live music generally on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturdays, as of April 2010. It is a popular location and draws a varied crowd from young to old.
