Fun Things to Do in Boston in December

Whether you are a Boston resident or just visiting, there is lots to do in Bean Town during the holiday season. You can stay warm with indoor activities, or brave the cold to enjoy winter fun. Whatever your mood, Boston in December has something to offer.

  1. Shopping

    • Get your holiday shopping started in Boston. Prudential Center, Newbury Street, Downtown Crossing Area and Quincy Market are decorated for the Christmas season and full of shoppers. Search for the seasonal sales to make the most of your holiday spending.

    Christmas Decorations

    • Enjoy the holiday lights. The mayor of Boston traditionally turns on the city's Christmas lights during an annual ceremony at the Prudential Center. Local dance teams perform and choruses sing at this festive event. Even if you miss the actual lighting ceremony, you can enjoy the lights throughout the month of December.

    Live Entertainment

    • Take in some live entertainment. Purchase tickets to the Boston Pops Holiday concert at Waltham Symphony Orchestra or The Nutcracker Ballet at the Opera House. The Boston Bruins National Hockey League team plays in December at TD Garden.

    Ice Skating

    • Ice skate at the Frog Pond at Boston Common. Ice skates are available for rent. Skaters can skim across the ice surrounded by holiday lights.

    Dining

    • Go out to eat. Boston is home to a variety of restaurants. Have dinner at one of the area's fine dining establishments or go for a more casual dining experience at one of Boston's more affordable eateries.

    Galleries

    • Stay warm inside at a gallery or museum. Some lesser-known gems include the Museum of Science Library or the Boston Tea Party Museum and Ship.

    Festival

    • Ring in the new year at First Night, Boston's daylong New Year's Eve celebration featuring live performances, food and a parade. This is an alcohol-free event. Two sets of fireworks close the evening: one around 7 for families with young children who have to get home to bed, and another at midnight to ring in the new year.
