Created in 1890, this is the first and oldest National Military Park, which was dedicated to the memories and preservation of history as it was created. Stone Mountain is the world's largest deposit of exposed granite and is metro Atlanta's most visited landmark. Located 16 miles east of Atlanta, the five-square-mile sized park hold many attractions. Ride the sky-lift up the mountain and enjoy the views of Atlanta. Hike up the mountain from another starting point. Ride the train around the mountain. Play golf at the 36-hole golf course or fish in Stone Mountain Lake. Many craft shows, celebrity visits, laser shows and festivals are held at various time year round. Many events are free, but there is a parl entry fee. For vehicles carrying 14 people or less, the cost is $10. Be sure to check the on-line calender to see what is happening in the park. Visit for more than just a day by camping with your family at Stone Mountain Campgrounds, which has 400 campsites for RV's and tent campers. For more upscale accommodations, stay at The Stone Mountain Inn or Evergreen Resort, both operated by Marriott Hotel.

If you are in Atlanta, you should not miss the memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, who has contributed so much towards racial harmony in the United States. The memorial is free of charge, and the tour of the park is self guided, except for tours of the birthplace and home, which are led by a tour-guide and can only accomodate 15 people.
