Christmas Vacations in the Ozark Mountains

The Ozark Mountains offer a unique entertainment experience. Many may not be aware that there are numerous Christmas celebrations going on in some of the entertainment centers of the Ozarks. Vacationers can experience bluegrass music, live entertainment with celebrities and a glimpse into Ozark history all with a Christmas theme.

  1. Branson

    • Every year, Branson, Mo., puts on a huge Christmas celebration. Live Christmas- themed shows with entertainment stars singing, dancing and playing instruments are put on at the many theaters. Performers have included Clay Cooper, George Dyer and Jim Stafford. Festivals are held as well, complete with rides for those wanting a thrill. Holiday lights decorate the city during the Branson Area Festival of Lights, which local businesses and others participate in.

    Silver Dollar City

    • About 10 miles west of Branson is Silver Dollar City. An O Little Town of Bethlehem marketplace complete with Middle Eastern food, crafts and entertainment (including a live Nativity scene) give visitors a taste of the setting Jesus was born into. A Christmas tree with special effects is set up to blink lights in unison to different hymns. The tree measures over five stories tall. The re-created 1880 Ozark village in Silver Dollar City is decorated with Christmas lights to celebrate the season and give a glimpse into the history of the Ozark Mountains.

    Rolla

    • Rolla, Mo., puts on an Ozark Christmas bluegrass and variety production that gives a local flavor to the Christmas season. The production is held at the former campus of Missouri-Rolla. Several music bands, cloggers and even a "Bluegrass Ballet" perform at the theater. While not as well-known as Branson or Silver Dollar City, the Ozark Christmas bluegrass and variety production provides a less glitzy and polished holiday celebration that caters to local tastes and traditions.
