Short Drive Vacations From Ohio

Ohio offers plenty of vacation opportunities, but for those who live there, it's nice to cross the border from time to time for fun. Luckily, the five bordering states also have their fair share of destination locations that are just a short drive from the Buckeye State. Their specific topography and cultures provide plenty of activities that range from outdoor adventures to big-city entertainment and accommodate a wide range of budgets.

  1. Detroit

    • Downtown Detroit, about an hour's drive from Toledo, offers several things to do for those who can't quite make up their minds. The Motor City has three professional teams for sports fans and several casinos for those feeling lucky. Greektown is a good spot to hunt for baklava. Music lovers will like the Motown Historical Museum, which has preserved Berry Gordy Jr.'s "Hitsville U.S.A." studio and vocalist-related memorabilia.

    Brown County, Ind.

    • In the northeast corner of the Hoosier State, Brown County is known for its picturesque landscape and pioneering spirit. Brown County State Park, spanning 16,000 acres, is the largest in the state and features scenic vistas, trails and nature programs. Nashville offers many shopping opportunities with its locally owned clothing boutiques, eateries and art galleries.

    Pittsburgh

    • One look at the Pittsburgh skyline is all it takes to convince visitors of its architectural importance. The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council offers self-guided walking tours showcasing public art and buildings downtown and the city's Oakland neighborhood. Houses built by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, including Fallingwater, Duncan House and Kentucky Knob, also adorn the Laurel Highlands.

    Cumberland Falls, Ken.

    • Dubbed "The Niagara of the Midwest," Cumberland Falls in southern Kentucky features a breathtaking view of cascading water falling 60 feet into a gorge. On a clear, full-moon night, visitors have been known to see a phenomenon called a "moonbow" within the waterfall's mist. Accommodations include the Dupont Lodge, cottages and camping facilities. The Riverview Restaurant has a view overlooking the Cumberland River. Hiking trails, swimming, horseback riding, rafting by the falls and other outdoor adventures abound.

    West Virginia Rafting

    • Southern West Virginia's stellar rafting opportunities annually attract thousands to its rivers. The New River is the longest commercially raftable river in the east. The season runs from April through October, with specials often offered for groups and on holidays. Over the years, local outfitters have improved the safety of rafting and performance of equipment so that visitors of all ages can enjoy it. Adventure packages can also include other activities, like camping and fishing, to maximize outdoor enjoyment in scenic West Virginia.
