Waterfalls in Letchworth State Park, NY

Located 35 miles south of Rochester, New York, in Castile, Letchworth State Park is centered around a glacier-formed gorge with the Genesee River at its base. It was created in 1907 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The park is home three waterfalls, one of them the highest in New York state. An additional 50 waterfalls are along the river leading in and out of the park proper.

  1. Upper Falls

    • The Upper Falls is adjacent to Trail 1, south of the picnic area at the Glen Iris Inn. The Glen Iris is the former estate of the park's namesake and is now a hotel and restaurant. The falls reach a height of 70 feet and project a high rate of water current. These falls sit in a horseshoe shape, with a wide mouth of water flowing from the Genesee River. Hikers using global positioning system devices will find the falls at N 42.57849, W 78.04880.

    Middle Falls

    • The 107-foot Middle Falls sits adjacent to the Glen Iris Inn off Trail 1, with coordinates of N 42.58301, W 78.04241. These falls take a steeper drop, with an elevation of 107 feet. Park guides classify these cascading falls as having consistent water flow. Their relative proximity to the Glen Iris Inn and the trail's ease of navigation make the falls the most easy-to-access of the three waterfalls.

    Lower Falls

    • With a 70-foot drop, the Lower Falls is easily accessible from Trail 6A, the Portage Trail, which features a footbridge that crosses the Genesee River below the falls. These cascading waterfalls are rated as having a high, consistent water flow. The falls is at N 42.58551, W 78.02001.
