Despite its small size, the town of Oneonta is home to many cultural events and activities, thanks in large part to its two local colleges, SUNY-Oneonta and Hartwick College.
Hartwick College's Yager Museum of Art & Culture has five changing galleries and a permanent gallery showcasing the Upper Susquehanna archaeology collection of Willard Yager. SUNY-Oneonta has its own Martin-Mullin Art Gallery; the Wilber Mansion features artists living in the central New York region.
The Catskill Symphony Orchestra gives a regular concert series at SUNY-Oneonta, and the Catskill Choral Society has semi-regular performances around town. In the summertime, Hartwick College hosts a music festival, and the town has its own summer music series.
The Greater Oneonta Historical Society has a museum dedicated to local history, while science and nature buffs will enjoy the Science Discovery Center at SUNY-Oneonta and the Joseph L. Popp, Jr. Butterfly Conservatory.
Oneonta is home to a minor league baseball team, the Oneonta Tigers, as well as the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
The city's official website (see References) recommends that antique lovers head for the numerous shops along Route 7 from Unadilla to Oneonta.
