While there are many things to keep tourists busy in the City of Brotherly Love, if you want to venture out a bit farther, suburban Philadelphia offers many attractions and activities to please all ages. Removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, the suburbs are a bit quieter but still full of life.
Located in Philadelphia's Germantown suburb, the Awbury Arboretum covers 55 acres and is home to wildflowers, ferns, fields and trees. All of these combine to form a formal garden that is breathtaking to behold. Best of all, admission to Awbury Arboretum is free.
A bit further north in Bucks County in Lahaska, Pennsylvania (PA), Peddler's Village is a shopper's paradise. Featuring 70 shops and 6 restaurants in an 18th-century historical setting, Peddler's Village also hosts festivals throughout the year. A 66-room luxury inn is also on-site for those wishing to stay there.
Quakertown Farmer's Market is open Fridays and Saturdays year-round and features 225,000 sq. ft. of 120 indoor and 400 outdoor produce and flea markets. You can find everything from fruits and vegetables to baked goods to auto parts to clothing at Quakertown Farmer's Market.
Just a bit further down the road in Chadds Ford is the Chaddsford Winery. In business for over 25 years, this family-owned business features regular tours and tastings of the wines produced on-site in the Brandywine Valley. A cafe also provides food, and festivals are held outdoors in good weather.
For those interested in American art, the Brandywine River Museum will not disappoint. In addition to showcasing the works of N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and James Wyeth, the museum hosts many other American artists. It is located in an old grist mill along the beautiful Brandywine River, which provides a great area for outdoor strolls and picnics.
