Fun Things to Do in San Francisco for Kids

While many adults may describe San Fransisco as "artsy," to a kid the one-of-a-kind sights and sounds can be whimsical and captivating.

  1. Cable Cars

    • Before you hop on a car, stop by the Cable Car Museum at the corner of Mason Street and Washington Street. Learn how these nostalgic vessels work and see the huge gears, pulleys and cables at work.

    Alcatraz Island

    • Best known for its prison, this island has a rich history that will captivate kids. Younger kids are also sure to enjoy the ferry ride to the island. Tickets should be obtained up to 90 days ahead of time.

    AT&T Park

    • During baseball season, take the kids to enjoy America's pastime at AT&T Park. Everyone will enjoy their hot dogs while routing on the Giants, or the opposing team if you dare. If you have missed baseball season, take the tour which takes kids into the dugout and other behind-the-scenes locations.

    The Exploratorium

    • This enormous science center is packed full of hands-on educational exhibits designed to engage and entertain kids. It was rated "the best scientific museum in the world" by Scientific American magazine. This will likely be a full-day event.

    Hyde Street Pier

    • Hyde Street Pier, located within San Fransisco Maritime National Historical Park, features six docked historical ships that are open tot he public. The boats include a square-rigger, a paddle ferry and a steam tug.

    The Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park

    • No trip to San Fransisco is complete without a trip to the Golden Gate Bridge, even for a kid. At 1.7 miles one-way, you may not want to make the entire journey across the bridge with small children. While in the area hit up the Golden Gate Park. The park is enormous and has several features. Kids enjoy the Japanese Tea Garden and the expansive playground area.
