Red Rocks Colorado Facts

Red Rocks is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains overlooking Denver, Colorado. In addition to being a natural amphitheater offering perfect acoustics, it is a park with access to hiking trails and natural wildlife.

  1. Formation

    • Massive sandstone monoliths form the naturally occurring walls of the amphitheater. The monoliths contain a fossil history of the area that dates back more than 250 million years. (Reference 1)

    Established as a Venue

    • John Brisben Walker produced the first Red Rocks concerts from 1906 to 1910. Events were performed on a temporary platform.

    Change in Ownership

    • The city of Denver purchased Red Rocks from Walker for $54,133 in 1927. The city and county of Denver have retained ownership, with operations controlled by the Division of Theatres and Arenas. (Reference 1)

    Improvements

    • Construction of the amphitheater began in 1936 and continued for 12 years. On June 15, 1941, the park was dedicated.

    • The first Red Rocks "Easter Sunrise Service" was held in 1947 and has continued annually since. Concerts, meetings, wedding, festivals and tours bring 750,000 tourists annually to Red Rocks. (Reference 3)
