Colorado may be known for its winter tourism prospects but the state has plenty to offer summer vacationers. Summer weather is often mild with low amounts of humidity. Numerous activities for travelers as well as residents stretch across the entire state and highlight opportunities to enjoy Colorado's vast natural landscape.
Dude ranches in Colorado offer the chance for anyone to live as a cowboy. The Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association is a good place to start for information on its 28 fully operational member ranches. Available activities vary by ranch but include fishing, swimming, horseback riding, hiking, rafting and four wheel drive trips to abandoned towns. If you are interested in horseback riding at the ranch, horseback riding season is considered to begin during the months of May and June.
Whitewater rafting outings are available through several companies during the entire summer season. The length of time for these excursions range from quarter days, to multi-day packages. Areas that feature the activity include the Arkansas River, Colorado River, Blue River and Clear Creek. Anyone from beginners to experienced rafters can find a group that fits their skill level.
Hiking and mountain biking trails run over 435 miles within the state, including Colorado's 54 mountain peaks that reach as high as 14,000 feet. Many resorts which cater to skiers in the winter change over to hiking and biking activities during the summer. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Gunnison National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park and Mesa Verde National Park also offer their own trails. Tour guides are on hand for a fee at any of the trails or you can explore at your own pace. Some hiking tours run over several days. For example, Black Canyon of Gunnison, 250 miles southwest of Denver, takes two days and one night to complete. A campsite that can accommodate RVs is onsite for overnight stays.
Festivals are popular summertime events in Colorado. There are many festivals to choose from that fit your specific interests. Choices include a Pueblo area Wild West festival in May, the Palisade Bluegrass and Roots Music Festival and a July Hot Air Balloon Rodeo in Steamboat which features over 40 hot air balloons.
Many train tours take place during the summer. Some of the tours take you by the mountains and rivers while giving up close views of local wildlife. Along the Arkansas River, The Colorado Wine Train is an example of specialty tours. This particular tour highlights seasonal menus while providing guests a full wine tasting experience.
