San Diego is known for great weather and its beaches. There are several beach communities that offer plenty of things to do and all provide people with different experiences. One of the more famous beaches is Mission Beach. This beach community is home to the Great Dipper roller coaster, resorts and great restaurants.
Mission Beach is is a beach neighborhood located about 5 miles northwest of downtown San Diego. It is directly south of Pacific Beach and La Jolla and borders Mission Bay, an aquatic park, on the east.
Since Mission Beach is directly on the Pacific Ocean, it benefits from a very temperate climate. Average temperatures range from a low of 49 degrees F and a high of 65 degrees F in January from 67 degrees F to 78 degrees F in August. There are usually early morning clouds due to the marine layer and afternoon sunshine.
Although surrounded by the Kumeyaay Indians to the north and south, Mission Beach was not settled until the early 1900s as a beach resort. The area continued to grow, slowly turning into a tourist destination with the addition of several motor hotels in the 1950s. Today, Mission Beach is undergoing a renaissance with many of its older buildings being turned into luxury hotels, condominiums and offices
Mission Beach features many nightclubs, bars, and restaurants such as Nick's at the Beach. The town is also home to Belmont Park, home to the Giant Dipper roller coaster. There is a concrete boardwalk that runs the entire length of the beach which is great for running or biking
Mission Beach has features resort hotels, motels, and youth hostels. The Bahia Resort Hotel is a 315-room resort near Belmont Park. The Surfer Beach Hotel is right on the beach and offers views of the Pacific Ocean.
