The first known case of physician-assisted suicide in the United States occurred in 1997, when Dr. Jack Kevorkian assisted in the suicide of a woman with Lou Gehrig's disease. Since then, physician-assisted suicide has been legalized in several states, including Oregon, Washington, Montana, Vermont, and California.
