- The climate of the Kutch region is marked by a severe aridity, with very low rainfall and high temperatures. The salinity in the greater Rann rises by 19–30% during summer, thus, the salinity values remain high throughout the year.
- The average annual evaporation rate is about 200 cm. Due to the arid climate, the evaporation of water from the surface of the lake increases from summer to monsoon and monsoon to winter.
- The Great and Little Rann of Kutch combined holds the distinction of accommodating around 82 mineral species. Some of the notable minerals recorded from these salinas are gypsum, halite, anhydrite, epsomite, clay, sand, quartz and glauberite.
