The most famous immigration depot in the United States was located on Ellis Island, in New York Harbor. It opened in 1892 and processed more than 12 million immigrants between then and 1954, when it closed. Ellis Island was the first point of entry for millions of immigrants to the United States, and it is estimated that more than 40% of all Americans have an ancestor who passed through Ellis Island. The island is now a museum and a national monument.
