How to Start Radial Engines

Pilots who flew aircraft during the early years of aviation often had an uncanny knowledge of radial engine starting procedures. A properly running radial engine was often key to successful airborne missions during World War II. Radial engines are no longer manufactured for new airplanes, and fewer functioning vintage aircraft mean less pilot exposure to radial engine operation. Incorrect starting procedures can lead to costly engine damage, pilot injury or both. Minimize the risks by carefully following the specific procedures in your aircraft's operating handbook.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the engine oil level. Add oil as needed. Ensure the dip stick and oil fill cap are secured.

    • 2

Turn the fuel shutoff valve to the "On" position.

    • 3

      Open the engine cowl flaps.

    • 4

Turn the magneto switch to the "Off" position.

    • 5

Set the throttle lever to the "Closed" position.

    • 6

Set the fuel mixture control to the "Off" position.

    • 7

Grab the propeller with your hands, and rotate it through two complete revolutions in the normal direction of travel. This confirms that the cylinders are free from excessive engine oil or from a condition known as "hydraulic lock."

    • 8

Remove the bottom spark plugs, if you cannot turn the propeller by hand and drain oil from the cylinders.

    • 9

Reinstall the spark plugs. Repeat Step 7 until the propeller turns by hand.

    • 10

Clear the area behind the aircraft of objects that can be blown away.

    • 11

Climb into the aircraft cockpit. Prime the engine according to your aircraft owner's manual. Priming usually requires that you pump the primer pump two or three times.

    • 12

Set the fuel mixture control to the "Full Rich" setting.

    • 13

Switch the throttle control to the "Idle" position.

    • 14

Apply the parking brake and apply the toe brakes.

    • 15

Engage the starter for at least two complete revolutions of the propeller.

    • 16

Turn the magneto switch to "Both On".

    • 17

Disengage the starter as the engine starts.

    • 18

Advance the throttle as needed for smooth engine operation.

    • 19

Monitor the engine oil pressure and temperature gauges.
