Engine Specifications of a Continental IO-360

The Continental IO-360 series of engines has eight models in it: C, CB, D, DB, G, GB, H and HB. Teledyne Continental Motors manufactures the series, as well as other engines and components used in aviation. The engines can produce up to 210 brake horsepower at 2,800 rpm and have a compression ratio of 8.5-to-1.
  1. Dimensions

    • The engines in the Continental IO-360 series are 22.4 inches high, 31.5 inches wide and 34 inches deep. The C, CB, G and GB models weigh 331.25 pounds dry, and the D, DB, H and HB have a dry weight of 327.25 pounds. The engines displace 360 cc and have a bore of 4.4 inches and a stroke of 3.9 inches.

    Configuration

    • The IO-360 engines have six cylinders arranged in a horizontally opposed configuration. This means that they are lined up horizontally but are angled to the left and right alternately. The firing order of the cylinders is 1, 6, 3, 2, 5 and 4. The crankshaft is rated to a maximum speed of 2,800 rpm and has a recommended idle speed of 600 rpm.

    Oil

    • The engines can operate on different types of oil depending on the outside temperature. If the temperature is below 40 degrees, the oil should be 10W-30, 15W-50 or 20W-50. If the temperature is above 40 degrees, the oil should be 15W-50, 20W-50 or 20W-60. The oil pressure while the engine is idling is 10 psi, and the normal operating pressure is 30 to 60 psi. The engines can hold 10 quarts of oil.
