Volvo Penta is an engine manufacturing company under the umbrella of the Volvo Group. Penta was bought in the year 1935 by the Volvo Group. The company provides internal combustion diesel or petrol engines to pleasure boats, commercial boats and industrial boats that have power outputs between 7.5 and 1,500 kilowatts.
Volvo Penta manufactures five types of pleasure boat engines: diesel sailboat, diesel inboard, diesel sterndrive, gasoline sterndrive and Penta IPS. There are nine types of diesel sailboat engines that Volvo Penta makes and each has a horsepower of between 11.8 and 174, each has a rated rpm of between 2,800 and 3,200, each has two, three, four or five cylinders, and a displacement of between 31 and 226-cubic inches The 24 diesel inboard engines -- for pleasure boats -- have propshaft horsepowers of between 11.8 and 864 and crankshaft horsepowers of between 12.2 and 900. These engines are made with two, three, four, five or six cylinders, rpm capacities of between 2,300 and 3,200, and displacements of between 31 and 800-cubic inches. The nine different types of diesel sterndrive engines have crankshaft horsepowers between 133 and 355 and propshaft horsepowers between 140 and 370. Each of these four-, five- or six-cylinder engines have an rpm of 3,500 or 4,000 and each has a displacement of 146-cubic inches, 224-cubic inches or 336-cubic inches. The 10-, six- or eight-cylinder gasoline sterndrive engines have displacements of 262-cubic inches, 305-cubic inches, 350-cubic inches or 496-cubic inches. Each has a propshaft horsepower of between 190 and 420 and each has an rpm of between 4,600 and 5,000. There are 10 Penta IPS engines, each with a propshaft horsepower of between 248 and 850 and a crankshaft horsepower of between 260 and 900. Each of these four-, six- or eight-cylinder engines have displacements of 224-cubic inches and 780-cubic inches and rpm ranges of between 2,300 and 4,800.
Volvo Penta makes three types of engines for commercial boats. The 24 different models of four-, five or six-cylinder diesel inboard motors have crankshaft horsepowers of between 89 and 651 and propshaft horsepowers of between 118 and 751. Each has an rpm capacity between 1,900 and 4,000 and each has a displacement of between 146 and 948-cubic inches. The 11 different diesel sterndrive engines have four, five or six cylinders and displacements of 146-cubic inches, 224-cubic inches or 336-cubic inches. They have rpm capacities of 3,500 or 4,000, crankshaft horsepowers of between 103 and 370, and propshaft horsepowers of between 98 and 355. The two six-cylinder Penta IPS engines have rpm ratings of 3,500, displacements of 336-cubic inches, propshaft horsepowers of 295 or 314, and crankshaft horsepowers of 228 or 243.
Volvo Penta classifies their industrial engines as Stage 2, Stage 3A or Stage 3B. There are 21 Stage 2 industrial boat engines and each has a maximum power of between 1,800 and 2,500 rpm. The horsepower for each of these engines is between 166 and 768 and the displacement of each is between 5.7-cubic inches and 16.1-cubic inches. The 11 Stage 3A industrial engines have horsepowers between 200 and 540, rpm capacities between 1,800 and 2,300, and displacements between 5.7-cubic inches and 16.1-cubic inches. Finally, the 16 Stage 3B industrial boat engines are made with displacements between 4.8 and 16.1-cubic engines, maximum power capacities between 1,800 and 2,300 rpm, and horsepowers between 175 and 700.
