How to Winterize Volvo Penta I/O Boat Motors

Penta inboard/outboard engines are used for quiet cruising. The Penta can be either a gas or diesel engine and uses a saltwater cooling system. A saltwater system draws water directly from the body of water the boat is traveling through. It doesn't need a separate tank designated for cooling. It can use freshwater as well as saltwater. Winterizing your engine can add to the life of the machine. Many dry docks will winterize the engine when they store the boat. But the engine can be winterized at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel stabilizer
  • Fuel
  • Garden hose
  • Bucket (optional)
  • Storage oil
  • 1-2 gallons non-toxic antifreeze

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the appropriate amount of gas stabilizer for your tank and pour it into the gas tank. Fill the tank with gas.

    • 2

Attach the garden hose to the flushing plug. Start the engine and flush fresh water through the system. Allow the water to run into the lawn or a bucket. The water is clean and won't harm plants or animals.

    • 3

Spray storage oil on the carburetor while the engine is running. Stop spraying oil when a white smoke or fog develops. This is normal. Run the engine for five to ten minutes to clean the water intake system and thoroughly lubricate the engine parts. Turn off the engine.

    • 4

Remove the hose and all water plugs. Allow the water to completely drain from the water intake system.

    • 5

Replace the plugs. Fill the water intake with a non-toxic antifreeze. This will be jettisoned into water in the spring. So choose an anti-freeze that won't harm the ecosystem. Pour a little anti-freeze into the bilge.

    • 6

Spray storage oil on all of the moving parts of the engine.

    • 7

Remove the battery and store in a warm, well ventilated area.
