Merlin Engine Specifications

The early name of the Rolls-Royce-developed Merlin engine was the "PV-12," which debuted in 1933. Although production ceased in 1950, the Royal Air Force continues to use Merlin engines for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).

    • The Merlin engine consists of 12 cylinders, which are supercharged and liquid-cooled. The engine's dimensions are 88.7 inches by 30.8 inches. It has a dry weight of 1,640 lbs.

    Components

    • The classic Merlin engine is composed of an overhead camshaft with two intake and exhaust valves per cylinder. The supercharger of the Merlin engine has boost pressure linked to the throttle with a coolant air aftercooler separating the second stage and engine. The engine runs on 100/130 Octane petrol.

    Performance

    • With a power-to-weight ratio of .96 hp/lb., and a compression ratio of 6:1, the Merlin engine produces 1,290 hp at 3,000 rpm from takeoff.
